A list of the possible reasons could be :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The site was deleted in error and the earlier you notify the owners &#8211; the better. (it can be restored if you have a back-up).<\/li>\n<li>Maybe you have an automated\u00a0governance job that deletes unused sites after so many days. Once these sites are deleted it&#8217;d be good to know (for reason 1).<\/li>\n<li>Maybe there is an auditing requirement to track deletions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Either way &#8211; it&#8217;s pretty easy to get this all setup by using a site-scoped hidden feature as follows:<\/p>\n<h2>What does the Feature do?<\/h2>\n<p>The feature will email the following people as the site collection or web is deleted.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Site Collection Administrator + Secondary Contact Admin<\/li>\n<li>The Web Administrators \/ Owners<\/li>\n<li>Any users in the associated owners group of the site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Instructions<\/h2>\n<p>Please note, to get this to work, the SMTP settings must be configured from Central Admin and the users (above) must have an email address in SharePoint.<\/p>\n<p>To get started &#8211; download this WSP and save it to a directory on one of your application servers. (<strong>Also, do this out of our hours \u2013 as it will recycle the app pools on your web apps<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>On the app server, load the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell and deploy the WSP into the farm store as follows :<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/powershell-add-solution.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/powershell-add-solution.png\" alt=\"powershell-add-solution\" width=\"669\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/powershell-add-solution.png 669w, https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/powershell-add-solution-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now load Central Admin and navigate to Farm Solutions screen. Once you have found &#8216;Sitedeletealerter.wsp&#8217; \u2013 click on it and the click &#8216;Deploy Solution&#8217;\u2026 Wait a while\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/deploy-solution-central-admin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-980\" src=\"https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/deploy-solution-central-admin.png\" alt=\"deploy-solution-central-admin\" width=\"710\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/deploy-solution-central-admin.png 710w, https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/deploy-solution-central-admin-300x161.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, you need to activate the feature on any site collections where you wished to be emailed about sites being deleted. As follows :<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/activate-feature.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/activate-feature.png\" alt=\"activate-feature\" width=\"664\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/activate-feature.png 664w, https:\/\/www.collaboris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/activate-feature-300x149.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to customise the standard email message that gets sent out &#8211; add an &#8216;AppSetting&#8217; key \/ value pair called (&#8216;<strong>SiteDeletedEmailMessage<\/strong>&#8216;) inside the web.config of the web application containing your site collection(s).
